Relationship of Respondent Characteristics and Information Sources with Knowledge Anemia Deficiency of Iron in Adolescents

Abstract

Anemia is one of the health problem that often occurs among adolescent. Iron deficiency anemia can caused immune decrease, physical problem and also can decrease learning concentration that influence students leaning achievement. This research aimes to identity the relationship  between characteristic of respondents and source of information with adolescents knowledge about iron deficiency anemia. The study used correlative descriptive method with cross sectional design. The number of the sample were 197 students at Senior High School Jakarta using purposive sampling. Statistical Analyzed used Chi-Square test to identify relationship between gender and field/major with the knowledge of iron deficiency anemia; then Kendall’s Tau C test to identify relationship between age, source of information with the knowledge of iron deficiency anemia. The study showed that the majority of respondent were 92,4% 14-16 years old, 58,3% of respondent were male, 52,3% of respondent were science major, 58,9% of respondent have good knowledge about anemia, and 46,2% found an information from one sources such as electronic media. The result showed there was no correlation between age (p 0,927) and major/field  (p 0,240) with knowledge of iron deficiency anemia. There was correlation between gender (p 0,002) and source of information (p 0,012) with knowledge of iron deficiency anemia. The development of technology and information should encourage adolescence to acquire more knowledge about iron deficiency anemia and its impact.
