Abstract

Prolonged mechanical ventilation is still a common problem in patients after cardiac surgery. This number increase in patients undergoing both mitral valve replacement surgery and revascularization of the heart arteries as well. With the development of percutaneous techniques, the profile of patients undergoing open heart surgery becomes more complex and the risk of prolonged mechanical ventilation become high and  longer length of stay and higher treatment costs. The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of proloned mechanical ventilation after cardiac surgery. By stratification the risk, the health workers can develop management strategies for patients after cardiac surgery and allocate appropriate resources in their management. This literature study was made by searching a data base including CINAHL, PubMed, and Proquest. From the search results we found risk factors for prolonged ventilation in postoperative patients in the preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative stages.
